Jamia Hamdard University came alive on Wednesday with a colourful and energetic Curtain Raiser for the upcoming 12th International Convention of the Society for Ethnopharmacology, India (SECON 2025). Report by Sajjad Askari, Sanskriti Chandel

Video report by Muddassir Rashid & MD Hayat Anjum.

Organised by the Centre of Excellence in Unani Medicine (Pharmacognosy & Pharmacology), Jamia Hamdard, the event brought together students, faculty, and dignitaries on the university sports ground to celebrate the blend of traditional medicine, wellness, and youth enthusiasm.

The programme opened with an Herbal Awareness Walkathon, underscoring the centuries-old heritage of Unani and other traditional medicinal systems. Students participated in a lively line-up of activities including a lemon spoon race, three-legged race, a short article competition on Unani Aahar, poster-making contest on Shatavari, and the SECON Champions Trophy — where winners earned free registration for the main convention.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Jamia Hamdard Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Afshar Alam, in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Sayeed Ahmad, Director, Centre of Excellence in Unani Medicine and Organizing Secretary of SECON 2025, along with senior representatives from the Unani Drug Manufacturers Association (UDMA).

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Prof. Alam praised the innovative approach of integrating academics and athletics, remarking. “It’s a very good idea, and I’m eager to see who qualifies and gets this opportunity. Linking education with sports is a wonderful initiative.”

He also highlighted that the main conference, scheduled for October 30–31, 2025, would bring together global experts, noting that over 100 eminent speakers from more than 30 countries are expected. “This event will not only showcase traditional medicine but also reflect the spirit of holistic learning by blending knowledge-sharing with physical well-being,” added the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Sayeed Ahmad said the event was conceptualised to engage students in diverse and creative ways. “The energy on the ground today shows how traditional wisdom can be celebrated through innovation,” he remarked.

The conference featured a series of engaging activities including a spoon race, walkathon, and cricket matches, alongside a seminar on nutrition, highlighting the connection between physical well being and academic excellence.

The event held at the university sports ground, witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and invited dignitaries.

The Curtain Raiser concluded on a high note, generating enthusiasm on campus and setting the tone for what promises to be a landmark international gathering in ethnopharmacology and integrative healthcare.
