High temperature and heat-wave like condition in the national Capital is not only taking its toll on human beings but also animals.

Stories are surfacing of not only human beings but also birds falling ill due to lack of water. And when one such incident of thirsty bird falling on the school campus happened on Tuesday at 9.43 am, the school Principal Tazeen Fatima rushed to the spot to rescue the bird.

She told the OT that the bird suddenly fell on the campus.

“After coming to know this I rushed to the spot and directed to keep students away from the bird. As I reached close to the bird I saw it looking towards me and it opened its mouth. I realised that the bird was thirsty. I immediately took a water and started serving it from my hand. I also covered it with a towel. After taking a few drops of water the bird showed some life,” said Fatima, who is Principal of SDMC-headed Modi Mill Primary School.

A resident of Okhla, she said her efforts yielded results.

“After a few minutes I lifted the bird and put it under a shade where there was water. After which I stood far and started monitoring the bird. After drinking more water, the bird started making noise and gained energy. I was waiting for the bird’s mother to come and take it but it flew on its own. Surprisingly, it came to the school garden spot again at 1 pm making noise. We were happy that the bird’s life was saved,” she said.

Keeping in mind the blistering heat, some residents have started keeping water bowl on their balconies so that birds don’t go thirsty in summer.
