A professor at Jamia Millia Islamia has claimed that he was trapped inside a lift along with three others for nearly an hour at the university’s Faculty of Dentistry on Monday.
A purported video of the incident has also surfaced online and is being widely shared among faculty members.
In a message, Prof Majid Jamil, a senior professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, said: “Today, I was trapped in a lift with three other people at the Faculty of Dentistry for nearly an hour. The condition of the lifts is deeply concerning and poses serious safety risks. This could have resulted in a major accident.”
He said only one out of the three lifts in the Faculty of Dentistry is currently operational and urged caution.
“I request everyone to avoid using the lifts if possible, or take necessary precautions,” he said.
Expressing relief, he said: “I am thankful to Allah for our safety and sincerely grateful to Prof Nadeem Yunus, Prof Ansar, Prof Imran, Saquib Aziz, Askari, and other staff members for their prompt assistance during the incident.”
It is reported that the professor and others were rescued with great difficulties.
The video, when posted by OT, drew several reactions online. One user, Hafeez Ahmed, wrote: “This situation reflects serious negligence and poses a significant safety risk. It is concerning that service providers and the university administration have not ensured proper functioning of the lifts.
“All lifts should be shut immediately until a thorough inspection and necessary repairs are completed. No compromise should be made when it comes to safety and human life.”
OT contacted the university’s chief PRO for a response, but calls went unanswered. The report will be updated once a response is received.
A source said the lift issue needs urgent attention as a large number of patients visit the facility daily and use the lift to reach the upper floor for treatment.
