Be careful while withdrawing money from ATM in Okhla! Tabassum loses Rs 75,000

When you go to withdraw money from ATM machines in your locality then be careful not to repeat the mistake which Jamia Nagar-based resident Shamshi Tabassum did a few days ago. She said she ended up losing Rs 75,000.

Save community journalism by paying Rs 500, 1,000 and more.

In a police complaint, she wrote: “Withdrawal of money from my account without my permission. I went to the Canara Bank ATM (Abul Fazal Enclave-1, Hari Kothi Road, near Pizza Delight) to withdraw some money. I entered the card and observed that the ATM was not working and immediately tried to remove the card but it went inside the ATM.

“As there was no guard in this ATM I started searching for the phone number to report the issue. Then I noticed that there was a mobile number displayed (8098377650) there …I called that number. From the other side a person told me please wait for an hour because I am far from the ATM booth and if you want your card right now then please do what I am suggesting to you.”

She further wrote in the complaint: “He suggested me to push one button and enter the pin number immediately. I followed his instructions. Rs 75,0000 has been debited from my account since I did not realise because no transaction message has been routed to me from the bank.”

Tabassum said in the complaint that when the person did not reach after 2 hours despite several calls (not reachable) then she called the bank and placed the request to block the card so that no one could withdraw money from that account.

“Once I blocked the card then I checked the balance of the account and came to know that Rs 75,000 has already been debited from my account,” she wrote in the complaint.

Tabassum’s husband said he also filed a complaint with other agencies.

When the video report of Tabassum was posted by the OT on its social media account it solicited several comments with many residents making claim that they too have been victim of financial scam. Reacting to the video post on the OT YouTube, Canara Bank wrote: “Hi, we deeply regret for the inconvenience caused. The matter is under investigation….”

The September 2 video report on FB page of the OT has got 305K views with 370 comments till the filing of the report.
