25-year-old Jamia alumnus dies leaving behind Rs 18 lakh in medical bills
A Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus died on January 23 after more than 40 days of hospitalisation, according to family’s friend.
Jauddin, 25, who studied History at Jamia and passed out from the university two years ago was admitted to Holy Family Hospital on December 9 for treatment of intestinal tuberculosis, and he left us a day ago, said Jamia student Arbab Ali.
In death, Jauddin left behind Rs 18 lakh in medical bills with the major part being waived off by Holy Family Hospital administration and the body was handed over to Maujpur-based family.
It was at 4 pm when he died and we were apprehensive that the hospital will not hand over the body to family members, however, after our request the hospital administration gave the body and wrote-off Rs 9 lakh in medical bills of the patient, said Ali.
“Holy Family Hospital has provided concessions to Jauddin’s family. While they don’t have to pay towards the hospital bill, the family spent around Rs 3 lakh arranging medicines from outside. Anyone willing to contribute can still do; account details remain the same,” tweeted Ali, who is a student of Jamia and raised an amount to help the impoverished family pay medical bills.
“Jauddin has passed away. He was 25 years old and was a former student at Jamia. Nothing can compensate his family for this irreparable loss. Jauddin is no more, but we can help ease his family’s financial burden.
“We were able to raise Rs 3 lakh for him last month and the family arranged another Rs 2 lakh. The family is not financially well off, so we started another fundraiser today morning to raise 12 lakh,” he tweeted.
“Since December, he has been admitted at Holy Family Hospital for treatment for intestinal tuberculosis. After his operation, he had to be put on ventilator support and recently went into a coma. The hospital bill has crossed 16 lakh,” he tweeted.
