Kunafa, once made to satisfy hunger of caliphs during Ramzan, now available in Shaheen Bagh

Kunafa, believed to have been created to satisfy the hunger of caliphs during Ramzan in the early 10th century — some even say in Fatimid Egypt — has now made its mark in Shaheen Bagh, Okhla, Delhi.

Shaheen Bagh’s bustling 40 feet road is rapidly emerging as a hotspot for food enthusiasts. Among the numerous culinary delights now available in this vibrant market is Kunafa, a popular Middle Eastern dish. This traditional dessert, made with spun pastry dough, filled with cheese, and soaked in a sweet syrup called attar, is widely celebrated in Arab and Turkish cuisines. It is now captivating local foodies with its unique texture and flavours. The owner of the Kunafa stall at Shaheen Bagh shared with the OT that he uses all imported ingredients to retain the authentic Middle Eastern taste.

Known for its crispy, crunchy exterior and creamy, rich filling, Kunafa is being prepared at a specially designed Kunafa cart — the first of its kind in India. This cart was conceptualised and launched by an entrepreneur who initially started in Rampur and Moradabad. His vision is to expand this unique offering through a franchise model, and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

As the reporter explored Kunafa Junction, the excitement was palpable. The preparation process is as intriguing as the dessert itself. The dough, imported for authenticity, spins on a special machine, reminiscent of the whirling dervishes of Turkey. This spinning ensures even baking, giving the Kunafa its perfect texture.

The cultural ties don’t stop at the preparation method. The spinning tradition harks back to Rumi, the famed Sufi poet, and his whirling dance — a ritualistic movement symbolising unity with the divine. Even the caps worn by the makers are inspired by the attire of the whirling dervishes, adding a unique cultural layer to the experience.

Kunafa Junction offers an impressive range of flavours, catering to diverse tastes. From classic pistachio to indulgent Nutella and chocolate variations, there’s something for everyone. Each Kunafa is prepared with care and beautifully garnished, making it as visually appealing as it is delicious.

For foodies familiar with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Kunafa is a well-known treat, especially popular in the Levant and often served on special occasions or holidays. The most famous type, Knafeh Nabulseyeh, hails from Nablus, a city in Palestine. Although this dish isn’t mentioned in the famous 10th-century Arabic cookbook Kitab al-Tabikh, it appears in later cookbooks. The delicacy is considered an important part of Palestinian culture and identity.

    A new culinary hub
Shaheen Bagh’s 40 feet road has steadily become a culinary destination, joining the ranks of food havens like Okhla Vihar, Tikona Park, and Zakir Nagar. The market’s vibrant offerings reflect the cultural diversity of the area, with Kunafa standing out as a must-try treat.
For those looking for a post-meal dessert, Kunafa offers an excellent alternative to the traditional shahi tukda or bakarkhani roti. Its creamy texture and buttery flavour make it a delightful end to any meal.

    Why you should visit
Whether it’s the weekend rush or a quiet weekday evening, Kunafa Junction promises a memorable experience. The aroma of freshly baked Kunafa, the cultural ambiance, and the welcoming staff make it a must-visit spot.

So, the next time you’re in Shaheen Bagh, don’t miss the chance to try this Middle Eastern delicacy. Share your feedback, savour the taste, and enjoy a slice of the Middle East right here in the heart of Okhla.
