Jamia Prof’s old video viral; media accused of wrong context, police probe assault complaint

An old video of an assistant professor at Jamia Millia Islamia has gone viral. However, the university and the professor’s students have claimed that the video is being presented in the wrong context and is unrelated to the allegations against him.

Media reports stated that the professor has been accused of verbally and physically assaulting an employee of Jamia’s Polytechnic.

    Professor speaks

Amid the allegations against Professor Dr Riyazuddin, his statement has come out. He said the viral video is 6–7 years old and is related to taekwondo training. “No physical assault took place.” He termed the allegations false and said he would fight a legal battle.

Jamia’s official spokesperson said and as reported by PTI: “We have not received any formal complaint in relation to any physical altercation or any caste-based incident from our employee.” The official also said a video, purported to be of the assault and making rounds on social media, is “doctored”.

A former student wrote the video is old. “As his student I was in the class at that time the video is 4 years old…it is being used for propaganda against Jamia with a lot of negative comment on X.”

A top university official initially said the video was “doctored”. However, when it was pointed out that the video is old, the official said it is being used in the wrong context, as the professor is seen teaching students the art of self-defence.

A former student wrote: “…these types of things are the part of classes and kept the relationship strong between students and the teacher in every colleges of Indian subcontinent

In the video, the professor can be seen demonstrating self-defence techniques to students.

A person, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the way the video has been presented a few makes it appear that the boy in the video is the victim, which is not the case, as he is a student and the class representative.

Police probes plaint of assault, caste abuse at Jamia; says no conversion attempt

In the latest development, the police have begun a probe into the allegations. The police on Tuesday said no allegation of conversion has been made, contrary to claims on social media.

The varsity dismissed the assault allegations and the social media video as “doctored,” PTI reported. A complaint was filed on Monday by an employee of the institute against an associate professor of the Civil Engineering department, a police statement said.

The employee alleged that on January 13, the associate professor came to his desk, used objectionable language, and behaved violently towards him, the news agency reported.

“Legal proceedings are underway as per law. Statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected,” police said in the statement.

The police dismissed claims of a religious conversion angle to the row.

“It is strictly clarified that the complainant has made no allegation regarding any attempt at forceful religious conversion. Such reports are factually incorrect and baseless,” the statement read. The police urged the media and the public not to circulate unverified information that could disturb communal harmony.

The Delhi Police confirmed that a complaint was received on January 19, 2026, and legal proceedings are currently underway. “A complaint was filed by an employee of JMI Polytechnic against an associate professor. The allegations include physical manhandling and the use of caste-based slurs. A physical scuffle is alleged to have occurred on the premises,” DCP South East said. He added that statements are being recorded and evidence is being collected. The officer also issued a clarification: “The complainant has made no allegation of any attempt at forceful conversion. Any such reports are incorrect.”
