Heartbreak for Jamia’s Prof Asif Umar as mother passes away; tadfeen today in Shaheen Bagh

The Jamia community is mourning the loss of the mother of Professor Asif Umar, an Associate Professor in the Hindi Department at Jamia Millia Islamia. Dr Umar’s mother, Noor Jahan, passed away today at around 11 am at the Jamia residential quarters.

    She was 82 years old.

According to Prof Umar, his mother had been undergoing treatment for more than a year due to age-related health issues. Despite her fragile health, she remained the emotional strength of the family, he said. Her passing has left relatives, neighbours and members of the academic community deeply saddened.

The burial (tadfeen) will take place today after the Asar prayer at the Shaheen Bagh graveyard. Family members, friends, colleagues and well-wishers are expected to attend and offer their final respects.

In a heartfelt message shared with the OT, Prof Umar expressed his grief in deeply moving words. “My heart is so broken today that even words are failing me. Today, my beloved mother said goodbye to this temporary world and returned to her Lord… and today, I truly became an orphan,” he wrote.

He described his mother as more than just a parent. “Ammi was not just my mother, she was my entire world,” he said. Her love, prayers and quiet sacrifices shaped his life. Like many mothers, she stood as a constant source of comfort and strength for her children. Her home was a place of warmth, and her presence was a blessing for all who knew her.

Neighbours recall her as a gentle and kind-hearted woman who always greeted people with warmth. Even during her prolonged illness, she remained patient and grateful. For Prof Umar, her loss is not just personal but deeply emotional the loss of a guiding light who stood beside him through every stage of life.

He said she was always ready to help the needy.

As news of her passing spread, messages of condolence poured in from colleagues, students and members of the Jamia fraternity. Many prayed for her maghfirat (forgiveness) and for strength for the bereaved family.
