Three injured as clash took place at Jamia Millia Islamia on Friday night, according to the police. A circulating video shows students with sticks attacking others outside the new Centenary gate.
University Proctor was unavailable for comment, but according to a reliable source, when asked for comment, he downplayed it and termed the fight between two students a very small issue.
However, a university official said he became aware of its seriousness after the police issued a release on the issue.
The police said: “On 01.03.2024 at about 08:25 pm, a PCR call regarding a quarrel in the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia University near gate No. 13 was received.
“The local SHO, along with staff, reached the spot where only bystanders were found. Later, information was received from AIIMS Trauma Centre and Holy Family Hospital that three persons had been injured in the incident which took place in JMI University near gate No. 13, and their MLCs have been prepared.”
The police said upon local enquiry, it was found that one Adil Khan, one Zafar, currently a student of JMI, and Saqib, currently a student of Jamia School, had received injuries allegedly inflicted upon them during the fight.
“In this regard, a case of rioting and Section 308 IPC, vide FIR No. 86/2024 PS Jamia Nagar, has been registered. Further enquiry has revealed that some students and ex-students of JMI are aligned on a regional basis, i.e., Poorvanchali, Western UP, and Mewat.
“At times, these groups fight with each other on extremely petty issues, which are further aggravated by the involvement of non-students/ex-students. In this regard, the university administration has been contacted, and they have been directed to make all efforts to ensure that people from outside do not enter the campus and vitiate the environment,” said the police.
Teams have been formed to apprehend the accused, it added.
