Jamia’s Professor Polytechnic and Ameer of Tablighi Jamaat of Jamia Nagar Basit passes away

Associate Professor University Polytechnic, Jamia Millia Islamia, passed away today, according to reliable university sources. He passed away on September 9 at 3 am. Dr Abdul Basit was admitted to the ILBS hospital Vasant Vihar for the last one month due to liver problems. And he couldn’t recover from his ailment.

University sources said namaaz-e-Janaza and tadfeen will take place at Batla House Qabristan after namaze Magrib today.

A netizen sharing information about his death wrote he was associated with Tablighi Jamaat. He was 62 years old.

Born in Sambhal to a famous scholar with his grandfather being Maulana Abdul Qayyum who was younger brother of Maulana Muhammad Ismail Sambhal, Professor Basit did his early schooling in his hometown and then went on to study in Central University, Aligarh Muslim University. After finishing his engineering course from AMU, he joined Jamia in 1987 in Polytechnic where he remained till his death.  

Syed Hashmi, who studied at Polytechnic, said Professor Basit was a gentleman and was always willing to guide students in the right direction and his death is an immense loss to society and the Jamia fraternity.

His death was mourned in Okhla as a large number of Tablighis turned up at Batla House graveyard where he was laid to rest, said one Jamia Professor who was present there.

While studying in AMU, Professor Basit was associated with Tablighi Jamaat and continued his dawa work among Muslims. He was Ameer of Tablighi Jamaat of Jamia Nagar, wrote Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Qasmi.

Professor Basit has left behind two sons and two daughters. His elder son Abdul Samad is currently living in Kuwait after studying hotel management course while his second son Abdul Hadi is studying in BTech final year.
