“Patient had come with a complaint of pain in the abdomen, weakness and protruding abdomen. On ultrasound and CT scans a 22 *26 cms ovarian cyst having more than 10 litres of fluid was imaged. We took her up for laparotomy.A 50 *30 cm right ovarian cyst 22 kg in weight and 140 cm circumference was removed with great difficulty. My main challenge was to take out such a big cyst without rupturing its contents into the peritoneum. Also it was densely adherent to the right fallopian tube so meticulous dissection was done . The patient is doing well now,” said Dr Eram Khan, Consultant obstetrics and gynaecology, Al Shifa Hospital located in Abul Fazal Enclave.

This was the biggest tumour I removed at Alshifa, said Dr Eram, adding that previous record includes a 16 cm fibroid, 20 cm ovarian cyst, 3 kg ovarian cyst removed at Al Shifa by her.

Besides Dr Eram, those who were part of the team include anaesthetist Dr Arfan ul Haque, OT technicians, Sarita, Nemchand, Arshad, OT incharge Mobina and Rakesh-housekeeping.

The surgery was done at less than half the cost looking at the problems of the patient, said the doctor.
