“Advocate on record, Supreme Court of India”Mushtaq, who gave shelter to Urdu poet Asrar Jamayee, passes away
“Advocate on record, Supreme Court of India” Mushtaq Ahmad, a known personality in Delhi, passed away on Sunday night at 1:30 am in a hospital in the national Capital, according to sources.

“Mushtaq Ahmad was unwell for the last many months. He had heart ailment. We don’t know the reason behind his death in the time of pandemic. He was in hospital. Earlier, he used to reside in Zakir Nagar and for years he was closely associated with IOS general assembly. Five days ago I got a phone call from Faizan Mustafa who asked me about Mustaq Ahmad’s well being. I called on his number many a time but couldn’t talk to him. His death is a great loss to all of us,” said Md Atta Ur Rahman, Administrative Officer, IOS.
Born in 1953 in Siwan, according to information provided on his FB, he has left behind 2 children and wife. He was currently based in Mehrauli.
Mushtaq Ahmad was a kind-hearted person and when humorous Urdu poet Asrar Jamayee was unwell, it was he who gave him shelter in his flat. It was here that Jamayee passed away last year during Covid-induced lockdown. A few people attended his last journey in Batla House.
Mushtaq Ahmad’s son looked after Jamayee during his last days, said AU Asif, director Press Club of India and senior Urdu journalist. “Actually, his wife, who is from Tamil Nadu, is in deep shock,” said Asif.
“Whether, it was case of AMU minority educational institution status, Hashimpura genocide, triple talaq or minority status of any educational institutions, including Jamia Millia Islamia or any other issues related to minority interests, he was not only in the forefront for legal battles, but always extended all possible support. Also, he organised seminars and was invited by various forums to speak on the issue concerned,” said Asif.
His analytical and critical articles on these issues in Urdu dailies and IOS journal English were read with interest, he added. Mushtaq Ahmad’s roles in promoting the cause of India Islamic Cultural Centre and organising dozens of symposia and seminars under the IOS were highly appreciated.
Several efforts to contact family members failed as nobody returned the call or picked up.
