19-year-old girl dies in dust storm as wall collapses in Okhla

A 19-year-old girl died after a wall fell on her during a severe dust storm accompanied by high-speed winds and thundershowers that lashed Delhi on Friday night, bringing relief to Delhi residents from the blistering heat.

The girl belonged to Jamia Nagar.

According to the police, on Friday, they received information from Alshifa Hospital regarding a girl who had been brought dead due to the impact of a brick wall falling on her. Police staff rushed to Alshifa Hospital and collected the Medico-Legal Certificate (MLC), said the police.

“The name of the deceased was Shireen Ahmed and in the MLC, the doctor mentioned “patient brought to ER in an unconscious, unresponsive state, A/H/O impact of wall fallen over the patient during heavy gusty wind, as told by patient’s father himself,” said the police.

The crime team reached the place of the incident.

The body has been preserved at AIIMS mortuary for further proceedings. Post mortem could not be conducted as it was half working day at AIIMS hospital, said police.

A case has been registered and investigation has been taken up, said police, adding that the statement of father and uncle of deceased has been recorded who have alleged that incident occurred due to fall of a week wall built by the owner of top floor of the adjacent building.

The exact location of the building where the incident took place has not been revealed.

The Delhi Police reported receiving a staggering 152 calls related to fallen trees, 55 calls concerning damaged buildings, and 202 calls regarding power disruptions due to snapped cables across Delhi.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the wind speed during the storm ranged between 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, causing widespread disruption across Delhi-NCR.

The sudden onslaught of the dust storm caught residents off guard, with uprooted trees, broken branches, and flying debris causing damage to property and vehicular movement.
