Story behind ‘don’t hug Virat Kohli’ viral video: Unpacking controversy and fan sentiment

Virat Kohli is once again is talk of the cricketing world. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to start from next week is set to spark the longstanding cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. The match between India vs Pakistan match, which will take place in Dubai on February 23, is already talk of the cricketing world.

This match has already brought attention not just to the on-field action, but also to the emotions and opinions of fans. Recently, a video appeared on social media where a Pakistani fan asked the national cricket team not to interact with Indian players, particularly Virat Kohli, during the tournament. This incident has highlighted the challenges of balancing national pride, sportsmanship, and the role of social media in modern-day cricket.

The video in question featured a Pakistani fan who expressed frustration about the upcoming Champions Trophy. The fan, speaking to the Pakistani cricket team, urged players not to engage with Indian players like Virat Kohli during the competition. The fan’s concern stemmed from the tournament’s venue arrangement. Because of security issues, matches involving India are being played in Dubai, while Pakistan hosts the rest of the games.

This arrangement left some fans feeling disappointed, as they hoped for India and Pakistan to play on home soil in Pakistan. The fan’s plea emphasised not showing any friendliness or affection toward their Indian counterparts, specifically Virat Kohli, during the games.

The rivalry between India and Pakistan in cricket is one of the most intense in the sport. Matches between these two nations are much more than just games; they hold great national significance and evoke deep emotions from fans. Over the years, players from both sides have been seen exchanging friendly gestures, such as hugs or handshakes, before or after matches, showing respect for each other’s skills and sportsmanship. However, some fans have criticised these friendly gestures, arguing that they may appear too soft or undermine the fierce competition between the two nations.

The fan’s message against Virat Kohli in the video points to a common sentiment among some sections of the Pakistani cricket fan base. There is a belief that friendly actions between opposing players can weaken the intensity of the competition. For these fans, the focus should be entirely on winning, without any distractions like friendly interactions with players from the rival team. This viewpoint reflects the high expectations that fans place on their team, especially during crucial and emotionally charged matches. They see the India-Pakistan rivalry as an opportunity to assert national pride and competitiveness.

The incident also shows how powerful social media is in shaping the narrative around international cricket events. When the video was shared online, it quickly spread and generated discussions among fans and media. This example demonstrates how easily opinions can be amplified through platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, influencing both the players and the broader cricketing community. In the digital age, fan opinions can quickly become a force that shapes how events are viewed and how players behave.

The plea to avoid showing friendliness to Indian players raises questions about sportsmanship in cricket. Friendly gestures between players are often seen as part of the spirit of the game, which encourages respect and mutual admiration, regardless of the rivalry. However, the intense nature of the India-Pakistan rivalry complicates this, as even small gestures can be seen as controversial by fans. This situation shows the delicate balance between competing hard on the field and maintaining respect for opponents.
