Tuesday development in Jamia: Security stepped up, JTA’s proposed march to VC office, university new orders

On a day when Jamia Teachers’ Association (JTA) had proposed to take out a peaceful protest march to the Vice Chancellor Office from the JTA office in connection with some issues, security has been stepped up on the campus.

Following the two notices issued by the university, JTA post bearer Majid Jamil said the teachers’ body has called a meeting this morning to discuss on the notices and decided whether to take out a peaceful march to the Vice Chancellor Office today. It couldn’t be find out whether the JTA will take our march or has postponed it as till the filing of the report Professor Jamil couldn’t be reached for comment.

Besides, a day before the march two university notices have been doing the rounds on the social media in which the university has warned students of Jamia, including teaching and non-teaching staff not to assemble in groups/march/agitation/dharna/meetings etc. in and outside campus failing which the violators will be held responsible for action by the Delhi Police.

In a notice issued on the behalf of the SHO of Jamia Nagar Police Station on September 26, the university stated that: “..Section 144 Cr.P.C has been imposed in the entire Okhla (Jamia Nagar) with effect from 19.09.2022 to 17.11.2022,” also reported by edexlive.com.

“In view of the above, all students of Jamia including teaching and non-teaching staff are hereby advised to not assemble in groups/march/dharna/meetings etc in and outside the campus failing which the violators will be held responsible for action by the Delhi Police,” the notice stated.

In another order the university stated: “It has been intimated by the Jamia Teachers’ Association vide its letter dated 25.09.2022 that they are going to take a peaceful protest march on 27.9.2022 at 12.30 pm from JTA office to Vice Chancellor Office in connection with the issues raised by them in the meeting with the Vice Chancellor held on 8.9.2022.

“During the above meeting, most of the issues, covered under the university rules, have already been resolved and remaining issues are under active consideration. A letter to this effect was also sent to Secretary, JTA….

“The JTA in order to mount pressure has come forward with the same issue and planned a march of the teachers which are detrimental to the smooth functioning of the university.

“In view of the above, the Vice Chancellor, Jamia, has directed the undersigned to request all faculty members not to indulge themselves in any protest/march/dharna pradarshan etc and to remain present in their respective departments/Centres to avoid disturbances in peaceful academic atmosphere and smooth functioning of the university.”
