Truck gets stuck after part of Batla House road caves in, road closed

A truck carrying sacks of flour got stuck on Friday morning after a portion of the Batla House road, just under the Jamia Millia Islamia Metro Station, caved in. The incident occurred around 11:30 am and forced authorities to close the entire stretch of Batla House road, raising fresh concerns over the deteriorating condition of Okhla’s key roads.

This is not the first such incident in the area. Just days ago, a section near Holy Family Hospital had collapsed, which was only temporarily patched up, said residents, adding that it has been noticed that in this locality potholes are leveled temporarily with construction waste which is not an ideal solution to the pothole menace in Okhla and Batla House.

Batla House road caves in: Eyewitnesses speak out

Truck driver Mahaveer, who was en route from Bawana to supply flour in Okhla, told the OT: “I was driving normally when the ground suddenly sank beneath the truck in Batla House. A police officer assured me the vehicle would be pulled out soon.”

Another local, Aamir Ansari, expressed frustration over repeated road failures:

“Every time a pothole appears, authorities do some patchwork and leave it at that. They never repair it properly. From here to Jamia, you will find 10 such potholes. The ground keeps sinking because proper work is never done. This is the kind of development we have in Okhla through our MLA.”

    Rain and waterlogging worsen situation

Continuous rain since morning had already caused waterlogging across Okhla, with residents reporting one to one-and-a-half feet of water in lanes from Okhla Head to Okhla Market and Tikona Park.

“Go to Okhla Head, Okhla Market there’s water everywhere. People are struggling to survive,” Ansari said.

Luckily, no injuries were reported as schools were off and traffic was relatively light. However, locals feared that had this occurred during school hours, it could have been a major tragedy.

Delhi Police quickly barricaded the affected stretch, diverting traffic to prevent further accidents. Residents, however, worry about recurring traffic jams and demand permanent structural repair rather than temporary fixes.

Truck extricated, JCB and crane got stuck

Just minutes after the mishap, Zakir Nagar Councillor Nazia Danish arrived at the scene where repair work on the road had just begun.

Speaking from the spot, her aide Wajid, who was streaming live on social media, captured the chaotic scene: “This JCB came to remove the stuck crane and it got stuck too! First the truck got trapped, and now the JCB. Look at the condition here the road has completely caved in.”

He said the original truck has since been pulled out.

Nazia Danish didn’t hold back her criticism of MLA Amanatullah Khan, pointing directly at the state of affairs in his constituency. “This is what ‘development’ looks like in the MLA’s area. The machine came to help, and it also got stuck. Look at how frequently such incidents are happening here. This is a 200-meter-long road riddled with patches. I urge everyone passing through to avoid this road today if your travel isn’t urgent. The road is sinking in multiple spots.”

She further appealed to local authorities for immediate action: “At the very least, deploy your labourers and administration so that people’s lives and property are protected, and children get relief. Look closely you can see this is right under the Jamia Metro. How is this acceptable?”
