Self, WhatsApp Covid medication proves life threatening for Okhla resident

Self-medication can prove fatal. This is something that doctors always warn patients and what is comes to Covid-10 then self-medication can only create more health issues. Despite this fact there are a few who go for self or WhatsApp medication to treat Covid.

The case in point is of one Okhla resident. According to a reliable source, the man was giving self medication to his sister after she tested Covid positive.

He was in touch with three doctors and got prescriptions from them for free, said a source, adding that he gave medicines prescribed by all three doctors without informing them until his sister’s condition worsened after she complained of severe chest pain.

It was then that he called a known general physician to his house who asked for medicines being given to the woman, said the source.

The doctor was left shocked after coming to know that the man was giving three different medicines with same combination and when asked why he did so, the man said he thought giving medicines prescribed by three doctors would cure the infection fast, he said.

On the doctor’s suggestion he stopped all other medicines (WhatsApp and self medication) after which the condition of his sister improved and she is recovering, said the source, adding that the long-term impact of these drugs is not known.

He said it is important to create awareness in the locality that after finding Covid symptoms residents should see qualified doctors and not go for self or WhatsApp medication which a small number of people might be doing.

As reported in The Hindu, Professor of Pulmonology at Government and General Hospital, Erragadda, Dr M Narender said: “The kind of medicines prescribed, their dosage change from patient to patient depending on age, severity of Covid-19, co-morbidities such as diabetes, and other factors. One prescription does not serve all patients. Self-medication can worsen their health condition and can have long-term effects also.”
