Police identified the victims as 42-year-old Rahela, alias Naseema Khatoon, a homemaker, and her eight-year-old son Elamul Hussain, reported HT.

According to police, some eyewitnesses said the woman and her children were crossing the road when the speeding Hyundai I 10 car hit her. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area, said the report.

The car was being driven by a 26-year-old youth who was arrested, said several media reports.

Police received a call around 12.47pm about the accident opposite Asia Pacific Mall, reported TOI.

“A team went to spot and took the injured to hospital,” police said. “The victims were going to Jasola. The girl wasn’t injured,” an officer said, reported TOI.

Both mother and son were declared brought dead by doctors. “The accident occurred due to the rash and negligent driving by the driver of the car,” the officer pointed out.

“The driver of the car was not under the influence of any drug or psychotropic substance. He was going home after attending a marriage function in Noida,” the officer said, adding that his father is a businessman in Jharkhand.

The woman’s husband works as a caretaker of a mosque. “Earlier they had lost their two children to jaundice. Only the husband and the daughter are left in the family now,” the officer said.
