Scholars from across world explore Quran–science dialogue

An international conference on the theme “The Quran and Science” was organised at Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday. The event brought together scholars from across the world to examine the relationship between Quranic wisdom and contemporary scientific knowledge.

The three-day conference, jointly organised by the Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia, Welayat Foundation and Iran’s Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, sought to strengthen interdisciplinary research and promote sustained academic dialogue between religious thought and modern scientific inquiry. Academics, university professors and researchers from diverse disciplines participated in the event, with international delegates attending from India, Iran, Indonesia and several other European countries.

“At a time when discussions on the relationship between faith and science continue to gain prominence, the organisers described the conference as an effort to provide a rigorous academic platform for engagement between Quranic studies and various branches of science,” it said.

The thematic structure of the conference was designed to reflect established classifications of scientific disciplines, including the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and to examine how these fields intersect with Quranic studies. Academic panels explored both classical and emerging domains, encouraging scholars to engage with new questions in this complex and evolving area of research.

A key highlight of the conference was a special panel titled “The Quran and the Family,” which focused on contemporary social challenges related to family structures and relationships in society. The panel drew upon family systems theory while also examining the epistemological foundations of the family in Islamic thought, offering perspectives that integrated social science frameworks with Quranic principles.

The conference objectives included advancing interdisciplinary research by enhancing dialogue between religion and science, fostering international academic collaboration, and facilitating the exchange of ideas among scholars actively engaged in Quranic and scientific studies. Another major focus was the examination and systematisation of Quranic epistemological principles across different scientific fields, with particular attention to social issues viewed through both scientific and Islamic perspectives.

The conference was formally inaugurated on Wednesday by the Official Representative of the Supreme Leader of Iran in India, Hojjat al Islam Dr. Hakim Elahi and Jamia Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mazhar Asif at the Dr MA Ansari Auditorium, Jamia. The inaugural session featured senior academics and representatives from the organising institutions, who underlined the importance of scholarly engagement between revelation and reason. It was followed by the academic panel discussion in the technical session.
