Govt to construct 15 MGD STP, 2 SPS to make Yamuna pollution-free

For cleaning of the Yamuna by 2025 and to provide 24-hour clean tap water to every household in Delhi, and to connect all unauthorised colonies with sewerage networks, project of construction of 22 MGD Sewer Pumping Station (SPS) and 15 MGD STP at Jindpur in Narela assembly constituency and 9 MGD SPS at Hiranki has been approved.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday said this project will benefit about 4.17 lakh people of 40 unauthorised colonies and 14 villages of Narela and Burari.

Sisodia has directed the DJB officials to complete the quality work within the stipulated timelines.

Sisodia said a 15 MGD capacity STP will be constructed in Jindpur by the Delhi Jal Board. After the commissioning of this STP equipped with modern technology, the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) level of the sewage water will be purified and brought up to 10, he said.

“Along with this, emphasis will be laid on the reuse of treated water from this STP. The treated water coming from the STP will not only help in cleaning the Yamuna but is also useful for other activities as well. This can be used for purposes like horticulture and rejuvenation of Delhi’s lakes, etc. to meet the growing demand for potable water,” it said.

After the commissioning of the STP equipped with modern technology to be built in Jindpur, the Biological Oxidation Demand (BOD) of the polluted water will be purified and brought up to 10, said the government.

“Due to this, about 12.45 MGD of sewer water will get purified and fall into Yamuna. Actually, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of sewer water is up to 250. The sewerage water is treated and brought up to 10. After this, it is released into the drain. Two things are seen in the treated sewer water.

“The first is BOD and the second is COD. BOD is the amount of oxygen that is consumed by bacteria decomposing organic matter under aerobic conditions. Whereas, COD is the amount of oxygen required for the chemical oxidation of total organic matter in the water. Apart from this, TSS is also an important measure to check the quality of water.

“Total Suspended Solids (TSS) are the fraction of particulate matter that remains in suspension in water. As per the current DPCC norms, the parameters of treated effluent with bio-nutrient removal should be BOD<10 mg/l and TSS>10 mg per liter. That’s why STP equipped with modern technology is being constructed in Jindpur,” it said.

The Delhi government has decided to construct 22 MGD SPS in Jindpur and 9 MGD SPS in Hiranki to pump sewer water to STP.

Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) will play an important role in making the water reach the STP from the houses which are connected to the internal sewer line. The sewerage will be sent to STP through the motor pump in SPS.

Sisodia said alarms will be installed in these sewage pumping stations to warn about water overflow or any malfunction.

“This will give immediate warning to the officials of Delhi Jal Board that the risk of sewage overflow has increased so that appropriate steps can be taken in time. Explaining that monitoring of sewer pumping stations will be done through IoT monitoring devices.

“The sensor fitted in this electronic device will ensure that an alert is sent to the senior officials as soon as the dirty water of the sewer fills up to a certain level in the pooping station. So that both the responsibility and accountability of the operator present at the sewage pumping station can be fixed,” it said.
