Pet parrot goes missing, heartbroken Shaheen Bagh family announces Rs 5,000 cash reward

A family in Shaheen Bagh has launched a desperate search campaign for their beloved pet parrot, Peepo, who went missing on Tuesday. To intensify the hunt, they announced a cash reward of ₹5,100 for anyone who helps bring the bird back home.

The family said they spent nearly four hours searching the neighbourhood on Tuesday but returned empty-handed. “When all our efforts failed, we thought of approaching the OT for coverage. We will be truly grateful if you run this story, as Peepo is very popular in our family. My children have refused to eat since the bird flew away,” said Fatima, the distraught owner.

Iram, her daughter, explained how the pet parrot disappeared. “It was my brother who took Peepo outside to get some sunlight, as our flat rarely receives direct rays. The parrot is 1.5 years old. Around 3:50 pm, he placed Peepo on his leg, but since the bird was untethered, it suddenly took flight. He chased it as it perched on the fourth floor of a house. My brother requested the building owner for keys to retrieve it, but he refused. The moment my brother called out, Peepo took off again and he lost sight of it in the locality. He had earlier also taken Peepo for a ride but I don’t know why it flew this time.”

Iram, who describes herself as “head over heels in love” with the parrot, said Peepo is more than just a pet. “We brought it from Jama Masjid over a year ago. Our interest in parrots began when a neighbour left hers with us for a month. That short stay made us realise how much joy they bring. Since then, Peepo has become part of our family. Everyone in the house is heartbroken. We haven’t eaten, we’re just praying that Peepo returns safely.”

Md Lareb, Iram’s brother, admitted he still blames himself. “Peepo flew away when I took it out to enjoy the sun. I never imagined one small moment could cause so much pain.”

“We request anyone with information to contact us at 9958915584 or 9958833643. We will offer cash reward of ₹5,000 for Peepo’s safe return,” said Fatima.

Some Okhla residents pointed out that such posters and messages about missing pets frequently surface on social media. In Jamia Nagar, most of these appeals involve cats, though from time to time residents also come across desperate pleas for missing parrots or dogs.
