Watch: Batla House Muslims help Hindu man cremate his mother in Okhla

A group of Muslims in Okhla helped a Hindu man cremate his mother in Canal Colony crematorium ground on Saturday night, according to Sudhar Trust head Md Shageer Abbasi.

The OT spoke with Sanjay, whose mother died in Holy Family Hospital and was cremated with help from Batla House Muslims.

“Yes, Shageer Abbasi did help me. Actually we are from Kolkatta and we had come to Delhi a few days ago after my relative died in Rohini. In between my 80-year-old mother needed hospitalization due to some health issues and as beds were not available after days of hard work we got a bed in Holy Family Hospital where my mother got treatment for four days and she had no major disease,” Sanjay told the OT over phone.

He said: “When my mother died I got worried as I was alone and I shared this with a person at Holy Family Hospital who turned out to be a member of Sudhar Trust and then Abbasi came and everything was managed. I am really thankful to them.”

Narrating the incident to the OT over phone from his Batla House house, Abbasi said after coming to know that Sanjay’s mother has died and he needed help our volunteers came forward to help him.

“Actually Sanjay was alone and at Holy Family Hospital. And he was crying after his mother’s death. When one of our volunteers consoled him, and found the reason then he narrated the whole story. In a few minutes, I came to know about the incident and I rushed to the hospital and assured him that he is not alone as we are with him.

“Our members did everything from purchasing items for cremation from Kalkaji to picking the body from Holy Family Hospital to shamshan ghat.”

Abbasi said this is Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb and Islam teaches us to help people at time of crisis. We are peace loving people and are always ready to help people of all faiths, said Abbasi.

This is not the only example of Muslim-Hindu bonhomie in Muslim-dominated Okhla. A few days ago the OT had reported how Masjid Islah had planned to open a Covid isolation centre for people of all faiths. The mosque Imam in an exclusive interview to the OT had said the centre is open for people of all faiths.
