Jamia reschedules May 10-11 admission tests for J&K students

J&K students will be given a separate opportunity to appear for Jamia Millia Islamia’s admission tests, as the university has rescheduled the exams originally to be held on May 10–11, 2025. This decision comes in light of the current situation, which is impacting the ability of many students from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to travel and appear for the exams as originally scheduled.

“Considering the ongoing situation and factoring in the well-being of students, Jamia has decided to conduct the admission tests for the J&K students separately. This is being done to provide an opportunity to those students from J&K who have applied but are not able to attend the admission tests scheduled on May 10-11, 2025,” said the university.

Jamia’s entrance examination cycle for the academic year 2025–26 began on April 26, 2025, and is expected to conclude by May 31, 2025. While tests for several academic programmes are set to take place on May 10 and 11, the university has clarified that those dates will remain unchanged for the rest of the applicants.

Only J&K students will be provided a separate schedule to ensure they are not disadvantaged due to circumstances beyond their control.

Considering the ongoing situation, Jamia Millia Islamia will reschedule the admission test for students from Jammu and Kashmir at the request of the J&K Government. I thank the university administration for understanding the current challenges faced by the students of J&K.

Minister of School/Hr Education, Government of J&K Sakin Itoo informed all J&K aspirants about the change in exam date. “Considering the ongoing situation, Jamia Millia Islamia will reschedule the admission test for students from Jammu and Kashmir at the request of the J&K Government. I thank the university administration for understanding the current challenges faced by the students of J&K,” she tweeted.

This considerate gesture reflects Jamia’s longstanding relationship with j&K (students from Jammu and Kashmir). Over the decades, Jamia has attracted a large number of students from the region, who have come to pursue higher education in disciplines ranging from humanities and social sciences to engineering and law.

Many of these students have gone on to become prominent scholars, civil servants, journalists, and community leaders, contributing significantly to their home region and the country at large.

The tradition of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying at Jamia dates back several decades.

The university has often been regarded as a second home for students from J&K.

Yasir, MA aspirant at Jamia, told a national daily: “During such times, education becomes the first casualty. Schools are closed here for security reasons. We have Jamia PG entrances but are facing challenges reaching Delhi. The national highway is shut. Students in Jammu and Kashmir are stranded and feel cut off. These entrance exams are life-changing, and we prepare for them year-long. It’s unfair that every time something like this happens, we are stuck in between, unable to move.”

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association wrote to authorities in J&K and has also approached Jamia, requesting the university to consider postponing the entrance exams or conduct a special round for the impacted candidates.

According to TOI report, in a public statement, the association said: “Despite repeated concerns, the plight of hundreds of Kashmiri students remains unaddressed. Jamia has started its entrance examinations, but many aspirants from Kashmir are unable to make it to Delhi due to the prevailing security situation in the Valley. These are not ordinary exams. They are life-shaping moments that students have prepared for over months, even years. It is unjust that they are being denied this opportunity due to circumstances beyond their control.”

Students are advised to regularly check the official university website and contact the admission office for further details.
