No casualty was reported as the blaze was doused in a few minutes with minor damage to the shop very close to the tree, said a resident.

How long the tree has been there is not known, but resident Abdul Wahab Malik, 40, said he has seen the tree standing there since his childhood. What led to the fire is still a mystery, he said, adding that though the giant tree was damaged to some extent it still stands tall.

To see something like this happen to a giant old tree that has been there for so long is very upsetting indeed, he said.

Another resident, who has been staying in the locality for years, said when he landed in Abul Fazal Enclave some 25 years ago he saw the giant tree with its root growing huge.

In old days the tree used to give shelter to many during summer and winter, he said.
Malik said he saw the blaze coming out from the tree behind a roadside shop while he was on his way to meet somebody on Monday night.

Malik did a FB live from the spot and on Monday morning he visited the site again to enquire more.
