BJP leader Atif Rasheed meets newly-appointed Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Mazhar Asif. He reveals this good news.

Jamia VC Professor Asif shared with me information on upcoming medical college, hospital, according to BJP leader Atif Rasheed.

Atif, who is NEC member of BJP OBC Morcha and former Vice Chairman of the Minority Commission, said he had the pleasure of meeting Professor Asif, his senior and predecessor in the student organisation. The meeting was held in Jamia VC office.

“During our meeting, he shared detailed information about the upcoming medical college and hospital in Jamia, as well as Rs 150 crore plans for structural development and educational growth, student welfare, and increasing opportunities for minority communities in higher education,” said Atif.

This positive dialogue provided an opportunity to take significant steps towards mutual cooperation and a better future, said the BJP leader.

“I am confident that under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif, Jamia will achieve new milestones, leveraging his academic and administrative experience, as well as his deep connections within the government,” he said.

The story of medical college and hospital in Jamia goes back to 2014 when then Vice-chancellor Professor Talat Ahmad had announced in public the university’s plan to build a medical college and hospital on the campus in the next five years.

After years passed, the issue of medical college and hospital was again raised by another Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar. In 2023, she told the media that Jamia has been granted permission to establish a medical college.

On the occasion of the centenary convocation, the VC told the media: “The medical college has been planned within the campus area as an eight-floor high-rise building which we earlier called -‘Health Sciences Building’ is under progress.”

“Meanwhile, we have reserved 5 acres of land near Jasola for a 150-bedded hospital. The medical college and the hospital can be at two different locations considering hygiene issues. We are trying to line up certain things and I want the framework to be ready before I leave this university.”

“The government has a soft corner for JMI as our teachers and students are performing well. We have done extremely well in the NIRF rankings and are in third position for the second time. The government is being liberal in opening up the medical colleges these days.”

“Although the government has given us approval for the medical college, they have not committed anything as of now. We will not wait for the government’s funding and we will opt for the public-private partnership (PPP) module where we will rope in some industry or a philanthropic group to fund us,” said Najma Akhter.

“If things will go as per the plan, then we will start the admissions from next year and all the admissions will be done through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),” said the V-C.

Jamia fraternity had been for establishment of a medical college and hospital as it would be a great relief for the residents of Okhla as there is no quality government hospital in Jamia Nagar, with only one maternity centre in Batla House.
