Teacher to pakora seller: Struggle of Jamia alumnus, Zakir Nagar resident who once earned Rs 40K/month

Abdul Qadir, who completed his elementary teaching education from Jamia Millia Islamia years ago, was a lucky man as he was earning Rs 40,000 per month working as a contract teacher and resided with his family in Zakir Nagar.

But life took a turn as like many others he was staring at an uncertain future as contracts with schools are usually renewed on July 1 every year, according to TOI report.

Finding things difficult to earn a livelihood in Delhi, Qadri, who suffers from 80 per cent locomotor disability, travelled to his hometown Siwan and started selling pakoras and jalebis there so that he could earn money for his family.

Qadir, who is over 40 years, told TOI: “Right now we are only getting assurances that they will look into it,” said Qadir, who worked as a contract since 2003.

“The money was getting exhausted so I had to find an alternative. I now make pakoras and jalebis. There’s tough competition in this too and the return is not even 100 per cent,” said Qadir reported by TOI.

“I cannot even give tuitions to students as social distancing norms will have to be followed.”

Qadir is also concerned about his daughter’s education and is not sure whether he will be able to pay fees of her as she was studying in a private school.

“I have no idea whether I will be able to pay her fees. She has no reading materials here. I don’t know what to do,” he said.
