    Plantation drive, virtual lectures, poster making competition on World Environment Day

    Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar planted a tree at the Vice Chancellor’s residence lawn as part of the tree plantation drive to commemorate World Environment Day today. The tree plantation drive was jointly organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Department of Environmental Science, JMI.

    On this occasion the Vice Chancellor said that the university campus is quite green and we should not only try to maintain it but should always try to increase the green cover. Emphasising upon the theme of this year’s World Environment Day ‘Only One Earth’ she said “Let us nurture nature so that we can have a better future”.

    JMI Registrar Prof. Nazim Hussain Jafri and several other officials of the university also planted a tree during the drive which was coordinated by Mr. V.H Siddiqui, Program Coordinator, NSS and Dr. Abid Husain ,Program Officer, NSS & Nodal Officer, Swachhta Action Plan 2021-2022.

    NSS, JMI will be conducting tree plantation drives on the campus and in nearby localities throughout the month of June and July this year. NSS, JMI also organised a lecture on the theme ‘Save Environment’ and an Online Poster Making Competition to celebrate the day.

    To create a green, clean and healthy environment in and around the campus NSS, JMI will also organise awareness drives to minimise E-waste, increasing water harvesting, using fertilisers & insecticides sparingly to avoid diffused pollution. Efforts will also be made to have a dialogue with residents of nearby localities and educate them about reducing all types of pollution.

    The Department of Economics, JMI also organized a special lecture today as a part of World Environment Day celebration on the topic “An introduction to the Nation Mission on Biodiversity and Human Wellbeing”. The lecture was organised in collaboration with Biodiversity Collaborative, Bangalore and was delivered by Dr Ravi Chellam, CEO Metastring Foundation and Biodiversity Collaborative, Bangalore.

    Prof Asheref Illiyan, Head of the department chaired the session and welcomed the speaker and audience. Prof Nandan Nawn, Department of Economics, briefly introduced the speaker, his academic credentials and area of interests.

    Dr Chellam began the talk by elaborating the theme of Environment Day 2022 ‘Only One Earth’ and emphasised the need of collective transformative actions on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. He also gave a detailed description for the various biogeographic details of the Indian subcontinent and its magnificent features which make it distinct from other world countries in terms of biodiversity features. India is one among the top diverse countries in terms of natural diversity and has four biodiversity hotspots among 36 global hotspots. Further, he added about the richness of Indian biodiversity in terms of crop origins, flora and fauna.
