Slain photojournalist Danish honoured with Pulitzer Prize for second time

Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus and Ghaffar Manzil-based slain photojournalist Danish Siddiqui won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for the second time. He was honoured with the award in 2018 as part of the Reuters team for their coverage of the Rohingya crisis.

Three other Indians, Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo and Amit Dave from the Reuters news agency, have been honoured with the Pulitzer Prize 2022 in the feature photography category.

Siddiqui, 38, died in Afghanistan in 2021 where he was on assignment and covering clashes between Afghan troops and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city. His body was flown to Delhi’s Ghaffar Manzil and he was laid to rest in Jamia Millia Islamia graveyard.

Danish graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia and then went on to do MA in Journalism from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia in 2007. Initially he worked as a television news correspondent, but later on switched to photojournalism and excelled in his profession. It was in 2010 when he got the big break as he joined Reuters as an intern in 2010.

““We feel proud of him but we miss him. The world is honouring him. He was awarded by the Boston University in April this year. Before that he was also given other awards. The world is recognising his work, his contribution. Unfortunately he is not there to continue his work and contribution. We have been receiving lots of messages since morning. He is being respectfully remembered,” said Akhtar Siddiqui, father of photojournalist Danish, who is a retired Professor of Jamia.
