Ghafoor Nagar residents live in fear of their only road to outside world being closed

For the last many days, residents of Ghafoor Nagar are having sleepless nights. Their main cause of worry is that what they will do after their only road to outside world is closed, said residents.

“We have been using this road for ages but on Friday Jamia Millia Islamia officials were trying to put a gate on the entrance. We anyhow managed to get it postponed but since then residents in the locality are deeply upset about how they will commute if the only road connecting to the main road is closed,” said Firoz Mirzaa, a post bearer of Ghafoor Nagar residents’ welfare association.

He said residents have decided to move to court to get justice and stop the university from closing the road being used by not only Ghafoor Nagar residents but Zakir Nagar, Batla House and other residents daily.

Just think if the road is closed then what people will do in time of emergency or fire as vehicles cannot enter from Batla House chowk area as the road is narrow there, he said.

As words spread on Friday many residents had turned up at the spot to convince the university authorities not to put metal gate and they succeeded in their endeavour. Zakir Nagar Councillor Shoaib Danish had also reached the spot and later on shared a few photos where he and other residents can be seen interacting with the authorities to stop the work. Currently, no gate has been installed at the entrance. The road is also used for visiting Jamia mosque and other centres.

Md Ayub, a resident of the area, said after a meeting of residents we will decide about our future course of action as this is injustice.

After interacting with several university sources the OT was told that the road is Jamia’s property. The university wants to install a gate at the entrance to secure its property with small gate to be opened for the residents at night, said sources, adding that at night locals from Shaheen Bagh park their vehicles here and the gate will stop illegal parking.

The move is to secure the university area and the university has all the right to do so, said sources requesting not to be quoted.
