Vice Chancellor Jamia Professor Najma Akhtar was the Chief Guest in the inaugural session which was attended by more than 100 participants from different parts of the country including the prominent resource persons.

Professor Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC-HRDC, JMI welcomed the chief guest, resource persons and all participants and briefed about the need for hosting the course in current scenario.

Terming COVID-19 as the most severe disaster of the century Professor Najma Akhtar said the numbers of COVID-19 patients are increasing every minute and there are different angles like health, disaster management and governance, legal, social and economic are involved with it. There is a greater need to discuss these issues frequently and definitely useful things will emerge out of these deliberations, she said.
She congratulated the Director, UGC-HRDC, Jamia for hosting the course where the resource persons are a mix of academicians and practitioners like IAS, IPS etc.

Inaugural session was followed by technical sessions which started with the lecture of Dr Anil Kr Sinha, IAS (Retd.) . He said there is a surprise element in every disaster and that is ‘ expect the unexpected’.

Dr Sinha said economies across the world have been hit hard by lockdown due to COVID-19 and situation is going to be worse in coming days.

He emphasised that role of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is more important than SDMA and NDMA in managing any disaster as it deals with all local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions at ground level.

Dr Sinha’s session was followed by a session titled ‘Managing Covid-19: Indian perspectives and Global scenario’ by Dr Parvez Hayat, IPS (Retd). Professor PK Joshi from JNU was the resource person on an important session titled ‘COVID-19 A Pandemic of Mistreated Nature’.

Professor Milap Punia from JNU was the resource person in the last session of the day titled ‘Revealing Patterns of unknown during COVID-19 from a social science perspective”.

Tomorrow, Professor Anil Gupta of NIDM will deliver lecture on ‘S&T, Industry and Businesses in Post COVID Disaster Resilience and Sustainability’, Dr Vishal Chhabra, Psychiatrist, Fortis Escorts Hospital will speak on mental health issues related to COVID-19. In other two sessions Dr Sunita Reddy of JNU will speak on COVID-19 : Public Health Issues while Dr Priya A Sondhi, Associate Dean (Academics), Asian Law College, NOIDA will speak on Disater Management Law and COVID-19.

How to overcome the crisis developed due to COVID-19 is a matter of everybody’s concern. Taking these concerns into view, many related issues and challenges will be discussed on Thursday, the last day of the course too.
