BJP local workers opposed the construction of the fountain claiming that it could be a ploy by the local AAP leaders to usurp land and build shops in the place. BJP leader Vinod Bichaiti, who is Mayur Vihar district president, said he got a call from RWA and market association that illegal construction is going on Kalindi Kunj road, a main road linking Delhi and UP.
This is illegal occupation of government land on a busy road by MLA Amanatullah Khan and Councillor Wajid Khan, he said.
Khan vehemently denied the allegation by BJP leader and workers and said the fountain is part of the beautification of Okhla and permission for which has been taken from authorities.
Some BJP workers and leaders created controversy by making false claim and they even called the police but the issue has been resolved, said Khan, adding that after coming to know about the incident he rushed to the spot to convince the protesting BJP workers to not stop the work.
Later on they left the spot and work for the fountain resumed, he said.
AAP leader Md Jabir, who also reached the spot, said the fountain is being made to honour freedom fighters and those opposing it are doing politics.
Another AAP leader Abdul Ghaffar said this is part of beautification. This is second fountain being built local AAP in Okhla as one was built months ago at Jamia Millia Islamia near Tikona Park.
