Students, locals mourn death of ‘Mamu’

The death of Ghaffar Manzil-based Azhar Hussain, who was popularly known as “Mamu” by the local residents, from cardiac arrest has left many in shock.

Mamu died of heart attack in a local hospital two days ago and was laid to rest in Batla House graveyard on Friday, according to social activist Syyed Fouzul Azeem (Arshi).

After being hospitalised due to high blood pressure, Mamu, 58+, went to bathroom and it appears that he collapsed there, he said, adding that later on when he didn’t come out people broke the gate and found him on the floor.

Furqan Ahmed, activist and resident of Okhla Vihar, said it was sad that he couldn’t be revived despite several efforts.

For many students of Jamia Millia Islamia and bachelors residing in Okhla, Mamu’s eatery in Ghaffar Manzil was a place to taste homemade food.  A Ghaffar Manzil resident said she was upset to know about death of Mamu as during Covid second wave she used to call him to send food to people whose families had tested positive or were hospitalised.

He was a gentleman and used to run a small eatery which was famous with students, she said.

One local youngster said the eatery was not very good looking but many used to visit there to have homemade food.

Before shifting to Ghaffar Manzil, he used to run his eatery at Batla House road.

He has left behind two sons, a daughter and a wife.
