Beggars on prowl in Jamia Nagar, menace goes unabated
Be it outside eatery or street corner or shops, beggars are all over Jamia Nagar these days. Residents said beggars of all ages start flooding the area from the morning and are seen in the locality even at night with some even using loudspeakers to attract residents’ attention.
Of them there are many who even knock at your doors and demand money. There have been cases where they use abusive language if you return them empty hand, said residents. A resident said once a beggar at Batla House road snapped at him after he gave him Rs 4 in change. He threw it on the ground, said the resident.
Some beggars are professionals and they follow you and keep on insisting for money outside shops, said another resident, adding that it is very difficult to spot the needy one.
One resident shared a story that how when he called a beggar to give khichdri she rejected the offer and said she only takes biryani. A social activist said when they started their drive to distribute biryani to beggars at night in the area years ago there were no takers as many told them that they don’t eat rice at night and asked for money.
Another activist, who runs an NGO in the locality, said once he approached a beggar at Tikona Park to convince her for doing some household work, she told him that when she earns enough from begging there is no need to work.
