The Dhobi Ghat community kitchen is being run by students of Jamia Millia Islamia since June 21.

“On day 7, meals are being packed for distribution. 250 meals are ready to be packed. For the past three days, we have been making, packing and distributing 250+ meals to the residents of Dhobi Ghat, Batla House slums. We will continue to provide meals daily,” wrote Arbab Ali, studying MA History at Jamia Millia Islamia and is one of the organisers.

He said it is an initiative of All India Students’ Association (AISA) Jamia Unit, Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) and All India Central Council of Trade Union (AICCTU).

“We are living in pathetic conditions, but this community kitchen will help us a little bit. We have children and elderly to feed, this will help us establish in a little way,” a resident of Dhobi Ghat said as posted on Arbab’s timeline.

Sharing his experience at Dhobi Ghat, Batla House community kitchen, Arbab wrote: “I had planned to reach the kitchen by 8:30 am today and had set my alarm for 7:15 am. But sadly I had to wake up way before that. Arjun, our cook at the kitchen called me at 6:40 am to inquire in which drum drinkable water is kept for cooking purposes. By 8:00 am, Ashutosh and I had reached the kitchen.

“The hardest part of working at the community kitchen is waking up early and then waiting patiently at the kitchen after the distribution from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm with nothing to do. I came back home at 7:30 pm. Now I’ll sleep.”
