    NGOs, leaders, activists flock Rohingya camp to give succour to people after shanties gutted in fire

    NGOs, leaders, activists flock Rohingya camp to give succour to people after shanties gutted in fire

    Hours after over 50 shanties were gutted in a fire which broke on Saturday night in Rohingya refugee camp near Kalindi Kunj Metro station, Kanchan Kunj, NGOs, local leaders and activists visited the site to provide help to the victims.

    “We reached the spot at 12:30 am on Saturday after coming to know about the incident. And we provided them food. Minor injuries were reported to people but they lost their belonging put in the jhuggis,” said Md Ozair Ahmad of Al-Khair Foundation in a statement.

    He said representatives of other NGOs also turned up to provide help.

    The fire department received information about the blaze it around 11.55 pm on Saturday, a senior fire official said, reported the media.

    The fire was brought under control around 3 am, the official said. “Fifty-six shanties, housing around 270 Rohingya refugees, were gutted in the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and appropriate legal action is being taken,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) RP Meena said.

    Since Sunday morning the flow of visitors, including activists, politicians and YouTubers were high. Several videos were uploaded on the social media in which activists and politicians made claims of helping the people hit by the fire.

    Khidmat and representatives of other NGOs too turned up. They uploaded videos on the social media flooded of them helping the needy.

    “We distributed milk for babies, slippers, clothes for child and sanitary pads for women,” said Dr Darakhshan Firdous (chairperson) and Dr Intekhabur Rahman of Al-Khair Foundation in a statement.

    Former Okhla MLA Asif Md Khan was also seen at the spot helping the impoverished. A video of which was uploaded by his supporter. Abdul Wahab Mallik was also present at the spot distributing food, tea and other items to the needy. In a video, Khan was seen giving other items too. In a video Wahab and other activists were seen interacting with the people hit by the fire.

    Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan posted about the fire incident on his timeline a few hours ago.

    Also, SIO delegation visited the settlement and met with victims.

    “The settlement shelters more than 250 peoples with 92 kids below 12.  Everything has burnt down: Food, clothes, and money. A few volunteers were seen feeding and providing clothing to the victims,” said SIO in a statement issued to the media.

    The SIO delegation sought proper settlement of the Rohingya refugees.

    The flow of the activists and NGOs continued till the filing of the report as some activists were seen doing FB live on their timeline showcasing their work, said netizens.
