AI will cause massive unemployment: Geoffrey Hinton, godfather of AI

Geoffrey Hinton, who is known as the ‘Godfather of Artificial Intelligence’ once again warned that AI could finish a large number of employment in the future. Hinton, a Nobel Prize winner computer scientist, further said that companies will use AI to replace employees. This will make rich people richer and common people will become poorer by becoming unemployed. He accused the capitalist system of such issues not technology.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Geoffrey Hinton said that rich people will use AI to remove workers and employees.

“What’s actually going to happen is rich people are going to use AI to replace workers.”

“It’s going to create massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits. It will make a few people much richer and most people poorer. That’s not AI’s fault, that is the capitalist system,” AI will cause massive unemployment: Geoffrey Hinton added.

Geoffrey Hinton said that it would be foolish to make any clear prediction about the future because the situation is constantly changing.

“We don’t know what is going to happen, we have no idea, and people who tell you what is going to happen are just being silly,” he further said.

“We are at a point in history where something amazing is happening, and it may be amazingly good, and it may be amazingly bad. We can make guesses, but things aren’t going to stay like they are.”

Hinton has said many times that if the development of AI becomes uncontrolled, it can prove to be dangerous for society and the economy. He said that machines can also think such thoughts that humans will not be able to understand. This is the reason why the dangers from this technology are also very big.

He said that at this time we are at such a turning point in history where many wonderful things are happening. These wonderful things can be good as well as bad. He said that we can only guess but things are not going to remain as they are now.

According Hinton, the impact of job loss due to AI cannot be solved only by schemes like Universal Basic Income because people are not satisfied with just money, they also get a sense of identity and purpose by working.

He warned that there are two types of dangers from AI. One is from the technology itself which can harm humanity and the other is from those who misuse it. According to him, there is a 10 to 20 per cent chance that after the arrival of superintelligence, AI may put the existence of humans in danger.
