Shaheen Bagh resident writes letter to Areeba Khan

Upset with the perennial cleanliness issues in Shaheen Bagh, a resident has written a letter to Areeba Khan. The resident, who requested not to be quoted, wrote:

    “Dear Councillor Areeba Khan,

“I want to inform you about the very dirty problem with garbage and sewers in the Shaheen Bagh area, especially during the recent Eid festival.

“There was too much garbage on the roads, more than on normal days. The open sewer water was also overflowing onto the roads near Shaheen Bagh sabzi Mandi. People going for Eid prayers could not even cross the road as their new Eid clothes were getting spoiled by the dirty sewer water.

“Around the Sabzi Mandi area, there are many local vegetable and fruit sellers who take up more than half of the road space. If anyone objects, they use bad language. The road going towards Jagan Patty is always blocked by these sellers, and cars can’t even pass.

“There are also chicken and meat shops in the area, whose waste is making the overflowing sewer problem even worse.

“All the people living in Shaheen Bagh are very angry and ashamed that you, our elected Councillor, could not even get the roads cleaned and garbage collected during the important Eid festival. For many months now, we have had to face this big garbage and sewer problem, but nothing has been done despite many complaints. As our area Councillor, keeping our locality clean and healthy should be your top duty. We demand that you take quick action:

    1. Increase garbage collection, especially near markets.
    2. Repair broken roads and potholes.
    3. Fix overflowing sewers and drains.
    4. Remove illegal road blockers by vegetable sellers.
    5. Strictly check shops throwing waste in sewers.

“The dirty conditions are very harmful to our health and give our area a bad name. We cannot tolerate this any longer. If you keep ignoring, people will get angry. Please inform us immediately about the steps you will take to solve this long-pending big problem. Our area deserves better. Thank you. A concerned resident of Shaheen Bagh.”
