President awardee, Jamia alumnus Prof Zahid becomes first Dean of newly created Faculty of Life Sciences
Professor Md Zahid Ashraf, a Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus, to take the helm of the newly created Faculty of Life Sciences. According to the university he has been appointed as its Dean.

“The university has been pleased to appoint Professor Md. Zahid Ashraf, Department of Biotechnology, Jamia, as Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Jamia with immediate effect for a period of three years or till further orders,” says university notice.
The announcement of the bifurcation of erstwhile Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia, into Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Life Sciences was also announced by the university.
“Consequent upon the approval of the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia, on the bifurcation of erstwhile Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia, into Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Life Sciences as communicated by the Ministry of Education,” said the notice doing rounds in the virtual world.
Prof Ashraf is also an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is also the recipient of ICMR’s Basanti Devi Amir Chand and DBT’s National Biosciences awards for his seminal work in high altitude related thrombosis in the Indian population.
Prof Ashraf is an elected Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is a member of the distinguished Guha Research Council.
A year ago, he had received the prestigious Visitor’s Award 2020 by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Prof Ashraf received the award for his pioneering research on resolving the mystery of blood clotting on exposure to hypoxia at high altitudes. He received a citation and Rs 2,50,000/- as award money.
