Jamia’s Urdu Department completes 50 years
The Department of Urdu, Jamia Millia Islamia, completed half a century of its formation tomorrow. On 25th November, 1972 the department was officially approved and came into existence. The department is celebrating the 50th anniversary by organising a number of programmes.
Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI is to chair the inaugural session of the event to be held tomorrow at 10.30 a.m. at the CIT Hall of the university. Former JMI Vice Chancellor Syed Shahid Mehdi and the renowned scholar Prof. Siddiqur Rahman Qidwai are to participate as special guests, said the university in a statement issued to the media. The guests of honour will be Prof. Sheikh Aqeel Ahmad (Director National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language), Prof. Nazim Hussain Al-Jaafari, Registrar, JMI and Prof. Muhammad Asaduddin, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Languages, JMI.
Renowned scholar Prof. Sharif Hussain Qasmi will participate in this program as a special speaker. A discussion will also be organized on this occasion in which former teachers of the Urdu Department will present their views. It will be followed by a Mushaira in which Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar will participate as Special Guest.
On this occasion, a two-day exhibition titled “Shabahai Urdu: Half a century story, in the words of pictures”, was organized by the department’s subject association “Bazm Jamia”. The exhibition was inaugurated by Professor Muhammad Asaduddin, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages, JMI today.
Apart from this, a documentary film on JMI will be screened and Jamia Tarana will also be presented by “Bazm Jamia”.
