Desi tomato at Rs 120 per kg, hybrid Rs 60 kg in Okhla
Unseasonal rain has pushed tomato price to more than Rs 100 per kilogram.
In Okhla some vendors are selling desi tomato for Rs 120 per kilogram. A housewife said she bought desi tomato for Rs 120 in Shaheen Bagh.
The price of hybrid tomato is low and you can get it something from Rs 60 and Rs 80 in the local shop, she said, adding that she bought just two tomatoes for Rs 20 on Monday.
According a media report incessant rain has increased rates of vegetables in Delhi and Tamil Nadu, especially in Bengaluru where the price of tomato has almost touched Rs 100 per kg.
Due to the rains, vegetables were not arriving in markets in sufficient quantities, which had led to the steep rise in the prices, said the report.
A shopkeeper said in winter tomato price is usually Rs 30 or 40 but this year due to short supply the price has gone up. It will stabilise in another 20 days.
Meanwhile, many residents are avoiding tomato in their vegetable dishes and some have curtailed its use as tomato is a very key ingredient in cuisine.
Some are using hybrid or tamarind as a substitute for tomato to avoid spending more and putting more pressure on their monthly expenditure.
