Journalism educator Prof Manawwar Alam suffers heart attack, passes away

Well-known journalism educator Professor Dr Manawwar Alam passed away on January 16 after suffering a heart attack. According to his son, Umar Farooq, Dr Alam was preparing for Friday prayers in his office when he suddenly collapsed after suffering heart attack. He was immediately rushed to Fortis Hospital, Sector 62, Noida, where doctors declared him brought dead, he said.

A heart patient with a history of blood sugar issues, Dr Alam had faced health challenges during the second wave of COVID-19. “When his condition had worsened, he expressed a wish that if anything happened to him, he should be laid to rest in his hometown,” Umar Farooq told the OT.

Dr Alam had a distinguished academic journey. He completed his MA in Islamic Studies (Comparative Religion) from Jamia Millia Islamia in 2004–2006. Earlier he did MA in Journalism from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology in 1999–2001. Though he initially sought a career in the media, circumstances led him to teaching, where he quickly established a strong reputation for excellence and dedication.

Over the years, Dr Alam rose to become Professor and Dean at the Satyam School of Journalism and Mass Communication, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.

Dr Alam, who had a huge fan following in Jamia Nagar, was known for his soft-spoken demeanor and approachability. Middle-height and bearded, he was always willing to guide youngsters and support his colleagues, earning respect and affection from students and peers alike.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, who remember him as a devoted father, mentor, and educator.
