The demolition drive was carried out by the Delhi Development Authority, officials said. The drive started at 11 am on Tuesday and around 70 unauthorised jhuggis were removed, a senior police officer said. After the drive was over many people stay put on the site. Some among them lamented that nobody, including local leaders, came to their help.
A slum dweller said he lost his hen in the drive and they will be staying under the open sky with no light and water and mosquitoes humming at a time when dengue cases are on the rise in Delhi. Earlier in the day, a local AAP leader Mahmood Ahmed was detained but released later in the day.
The slum dwellers said it was a day ago when notice was pasted asking them to vacate the jhuggis. However, they were unable to do so as it was raining throughout, he said, adding that and in the morning officials with police arrived on the spot to carry out the drive.
The drive which took place in the presence of heavy security was peaceful, said residents. It is not known where will the slum dwellers go, said residents.
