Only American Taylor Fritz reaches US Open quarterfinal, carries American hopes

American tennis player Taylor Fritz has produced an impressive performance at the 2025 US Open, reaching the quarterfinal. He is now the last male player from the United States remaining in the tournament, raising the hopes of his countrymen once again.

In his fourth-round match, Taylor Fritz defeated Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets. The match lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes, meaning Fritz won three consecutive sets without losing any. Throughout the game, he dominated his service points and gave very few opportunities to his opponent.

Taylor Fritz served exceptionally well, hitting 14 aces and making only two double faults. He won 91 per cent of his first-serve points and did not lose a single break point, keeping his serve completely secure. This strong serving performance kept Machac under constant pressure and allowed Fritz to control the rhythm of the match.

This year, Taylor Fritz has been in excellent form. He has recorded 25 wins in his last 30 matches, the highest among male players on the men’s tour at present. He also recently reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, further demonstrating his consistency and high level of play.

With this victory, Taylor Fritz has now reached the Grand Slam quarter-finals for the seventh time in his career. This marks his third consecutive US Open quarter-final, a feat only he and Frances Tiafoe have achieved among American male players in the past 15 years.

After the match, Fritz acknowledged that it had been a challenging week for American players, many of whom were eliminated early. He said he was pleased to be the last American male player remaining and expressed hope that the crowd would support him in the upcoming rounds.

“It’s been a tough week for the guys. I guess I wasn’t expecting everything to happen,” Fritz said. “I felt really, really good about our chances this week, but I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to be the last one standing at least and hopefully since I’m the last one the crowd will really get behind me and will me through it.”

“I had some battles the past couple matches, but just felt very dialed in, ready to go tonight,” Fritz said. “Thought I played just really solid, put a lot of balls in the court, was aggressive at the right times and backed it up well with good serving.”

Fritz’s next opponent will be Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion and one of the top players in the world. Fritz has never beaten Djokovic; the Serbian has won all 10 of their previous encounters. Despite this, Fritz said he plans to focus on playing his game without putting too much pressure on himself. He understands that the long-standing American hope of winning a Grand Slam rests on his shoulders. The last American male to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick, who triumphed at the US Open in 2003.

On his clash with Taylor, Novak said: “I don’t think there’s going to be any major changes with Taylor, because, obviously you stick to the kind of a game plan that got you to the quarters, and you know what your strengths are. You stick to those weapons…in your game, which for him obviously is serve and forehand, two big weapons in his game.”

During the match against Machac Fritz displayed excellent skill and strategy. He used a combination of strong serves and precise groundstrokes to control the rallies. Sometimes, the points involved long exchanges, but Fritz struck the decisive winners at the right moments, breaking Machac’s momentum and maintaining command over the match.

Fritz now carries the hopes of his country into the quarter final. The upcoming match promises to be both exciting and significant, as a victory could bring the United States closer to ending a 22-year wait for a male Grand Slam champion. His performance so far has shown that he has the experience, focus, and resilience to compete at the highest level and keep American fans hopeful.
