Once Okhla’s most popular name in hairdressing visited by bigwigs is history
For many old timers at Jamia Millia Islamia and Okhla, OK hairdresser was most sought after place for students and locals. After staying in the limelight for years, the building in which it was housed at Okhla Head now has been demolished for a new building and the hair salon has become history.
Reminiscing about the old Okhla days, senior Jamia alumnus Naseer Sultan Qazi, who studied at the university in 1978, said to get hair cutting in those days with Fazlu’s uncle was an arduous task as one had to wait for days to get the number.
He said in those days when Zakir Nagar, Abul Fazal Enclave, Shaheen Bagh and other areas were still to be inhabited, OK was the king.
Many Jamia stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, former TV anchor Suhaib Ilyasi who was once host of the notable TV crime show India’s Most Wanted, used to visit OK, Fazlu once told the OT in an exclusive interview.
And as the hair salon business expanded, Fazlu shifted to Jaswant Apartment handing over old OK to his son and other staff.
With population explosion in Okhla, new big players also came in the locality with most of the hair salon going air condition with stylish interiors and new accessories.
Now there is no dearth of quality hair salon in Okhla. But OK will be missed by old timers.
