Watch: Jamia students stage protest, demand arrest of Nupur Sharma
Some students of Jamia Millia Islamia, mostly of Campus Front of India wing of Jamia, took out a march on the campus demanding arrest of BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad.
They raised slogans against the BJP and Sharma. “Nupur Sharma has hurt the religious sentiment. Strict action should be taken against her and she should be put behind bars,” a Campus Front of India member said. Since early Thursday morning security was beefed up outside the campus.
The CFI’s plan to hold protest after Friday prayer was foiled as the university authorities sealed the campus with all gates being closed stopping many students from entering the mosque area with ease. A university teacher said he reached his department with great difficulties after offering namaz in Jamia mosque as all gates were closed.
A student said some journalists and YouTubers who had come to cover the march were not allowed entry inside the campus.
The BJP on Sunday has suspended Nupur and expelled former Delhi BJP media unit head Naveen Kumar Jindal.
Protests took place outside the Jama Masjid after Friday prayers with hundreds of people demanding the arrest of Sharma for her controversial remarks, police said.
However, Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari distanced himself from the protest, saying “nobody knows who the protesters are” and demanded action against them.
