    Maleeha Taqdees awarded PhD, makes family proud

    Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has declared Maleeha Taqdees Malik qualified in Doctor of Philosophy in Botany. She has worked on the topic “Prospective Validation and Characterization of High Yielding Maize Genotypes under Abiotic Stresses” under the supervision of Dr Ira Khan, Assistant Professor, Botany Section, MANUU, said the university.

    She is daughter of Malik Moatasim Khan

    In another development a two-day National Seminar on “Region in Indian History” was held at MANUU.

    “Region is not just a geographical entity but a way of life and to understand it, history plays an important role”, argued Prof. Radhika Seshan while delivering Keynote Address today at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU). She was addressing the inaugural session of a two-Day National Seminar “Region in Indian History” being organized by The Department of History, MANUU in collaboration with the Henry Martyn Institute, Hyderabad.

    Prof. Radhika Seshan provided a nuanced examination of the historiographical evolution of regional studies. She believes that notions of time and space is of prime importance in the understanding of history. She stressed the need for an inter-disciplinary approach to study the region.

    The Chief Guest, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, Former Officiating Vice-Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, drew attention to the intellectual and institutional challenges in studying regional histories. He talked at length on the necessity of studying regions and also highlighted the limitations of overemphasizing the political and empire-centric approaches to study history.

    In his Presidential Remarks, Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, MANUU, underscored the significance of regional histories in reinforcing India’s composite cultural heritage. He invoked history and historical works like “Hudoodul Alam Minal Mashriq Wal Maghrib” and “Abhigyan Shakuntalam” in emphasising the importance of the region as a site where identities are constructed and asserted.

    Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Registrar, MANUU and Prof. Preeti Sharma, Head, Department of History, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi were the Guests of Honour. Prof. Preeti Sharma delved into the epistemological understanding of the notion of a region by raising various questions like how region-specific studies should be studied and what constitutes the fundamental domain of the region.

    Prof. Rafiullah Azmi, Head, Department of History delivered the Welcome Address. He highlighted the growing significance of regional studies in revisiting and reshaping our understanding of India’s historical and cultural pluralities.

    The seminar has brought together eminent historians, scholars, and researchers from across the country to deliberate upon the diverse perspectives to studying regional histories.
