Jamia Millia Islamia has issued a hard hitting statement Days after students’ protest and eviction issue on the campus.

“It is a matter of grave concern for Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) that some individuals and anti-social elements have over the last 4-5 days been attempting to defame the image of the university and its students by spreading misleading, defamatory and malicious messages and fabricated videos using their social media accounts and other online platforms.

“These individuals and outfits that have nothing to do with JMI have also made public the photos and details of suspended students on university walls and gates. The University removed these photos from the walls immediately after getting information about it. The university strongly condemns such brazen and irresponsible acts and will take all necessary legal action against those who are found spreading false and defamatory information with a clear intention of tarnishing the image of the 104-year-old institution.

“In the official statement issued by JMI on 13.02.2025, it was clarified that a handful of protesting students had unlawfully gathered in the academic block of the campus without any prior permission taken from the Competent Authority and were obstructing the conduct of classes and access to the Central Library, besides, causing damage to the university property. It is a requirement of the university that any academic conferences/ workshops/ seminars organised by the departments and centres of JMI, also need prior approval from the Competent Authority. Despite this, the university administration had kept its doors open to discuss their demands but they refused to accept this offer and come forward for any discussion.

“Taking full cognizance of the adverse effect of misinformation on young, impressionable minds, the university administration cautions all its students not to fall prey to these fake messages and misleading rumours and advises them to stay focused on their studies and attend classes regularly in view of the upcoming mid-semester exams. It may be noted that classes are being held on a regular basis as per the university time table.

“Further, taking a strong view of making public the photos and other details of the suspended students, the university administration has constituted a committee to investigate the matter, determine the facts and identify the miscreants, individuals or organisations involved and will take appropriate action against them.

“JMI remains committed to safeguarding a peaceful academic environment in the interest of all its students and faculty.”

Protesting students who have been served notices have called a press meet to discuss the issue with the media, according to message being ciruculated on social media. Meanwhile in other development also being curculated online, students from more than ten departments of Jamia Millia Islamia extended their support to the protesting students against the actions of the Jamia administration on Monday and announced the suspension of classes on Monday.

The OT was unable to authenticate the veracity of the message.
