Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion, JMI organises a lecture on ‘Interdisciplinary Foundations of Disciplinary Formation’

In another event, the Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), Jamia Millia Islamia, organized an Extension Lecture Series on the theme “Interdisciplinary Foundations of Disciplinary Formation: The Concerns of Indian Political Science (1920s–1940s)” at Room 107, Noam Chomsky Complex.

The distinguished speaker for the session was Prof. Maidul Islam, an eminent scholar from the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, widely recognized for his significant contributions to political theory, Indian politics, and critical social thought.

In his lecture, Prof. Islam examined the colonial foundations of political science in India, underscoring the pivotal role played by academic institutions and key scholars in shaping the discipline. Drawing on foundational texts such as Political Processes and engaging with intellectual intersections between civics, social contract theory, Islamic studies, and constitutional developments of the 1930s, he offered a compelling historical and analytical perspective. His lecture highlighted how colonial frameworks structured early Indian political thought and generated rich interdisciplinary dialogues spanning political science, history, and literature.

The session was chaired by Prof. Tanuja, Officiating Director, CSSI, and convened by Dr. Mujibur Rehman, Senior Faculty at the Centre. In her remarks as Chair, Prof. Tanuja commended Prof. Islam’s erudite engagement with the disciplinary and intellectual history of political science, emphasizing the lecture’s relevance for reimagining disciplinary boundaries in the social sciences.

Dr. Mujibur Rehman extended his appreciation to the speaker and participants, observing that the lecture meaningfully enriched ongoing academic conversations at CSSI on interdisciplinarity and the social construction of knowledge. Prof. Arvind also offered insightful observations, contributing to a stimulating academic exchange. The event was coordinated by Dr. Sabah Hussain, Faculty, CSSI.

The lecture drew active participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members, who engaged in a vibrant discussion following the presentation. The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks to the speaker and attendees.
