“The Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, …and on the recommendations of the committee constituted for this purpose has approved to establish Alumni Connect Cell in the university and to abolish the Global Jamia Alumni Network (GJAN) with immediate effect,” said a notice carrying signature of Registrar Dr Nazim Hussain Jafri.
GJAN was a non-profit making forum. Though after being established it was not very successful in making lifetime members, some 500 alumni were its paid members, according to a reliable university source. It is not known what will happen to the membership money raised from the GJAN as lifetime membership was for Rs 5,000 and one year for Rs 1,000 with GJAN members entitled to get guest houses, conduct seminar on the campus, use library with due permission from the authorities, said a source.
What will be the features of Alumni Connect Cell is still not known or whether it is just change of name as old wine in new bottle. Only time will tell. Professor M Moshahid A Rizvi was chairman of GJAN.
If you visit the website then changes are being made in the GJAN section but many old materials related with GJAN still can be seen till the filing of the report.
Incharge of Alumni Connect Cell is Professor Ibraheem and Assistant Incharge Dr Md Imtaiyaz Hassan.
“GJAN will re-establish and reinstate the placental cord between the alumni and the university to facilitate cultural as well as professional exchanges for mutual growth and development. GJAN shall promote the interest, welfare and educational aims of Jamia and its alumni, establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship between Jamia and its alumni, and encourage lifelong engagement of Jamia Millia Islamia alumni with their fellow alumni and the university community,” said the information available on the university website till the filing of the report.
