29-year-old Jamia Millia alumna dies in road accident
Heartbreak for alumni and students f Jamia Millia Islamia after reports surfaced on the social media about the death of a 29-year-old alumna of Jamia in a road accident.
A PhD student she died after a speeding truck ran over her in northeast Delhi’s Shastri Park area, police said on Sunday. It was on Saturday when the incident took place around 10.20 pm in Delhi.
Jamia alumnus Jawad Hassan, who studied with the deceased, Poonam, at the university, said they were at Jamia and studied TV Hindi journalism in 2012-13 from the Hindi Department’s media course.
He said after completing her course, she worked as journalist in a few places and then started teaching job and currently was doing PhD from a college in Haridwar in Uttarakhand.
Mohammad Muid, 34, who was with Poonam survived the accident, said Hassan, a journalist.
He picked her from Old Delhi railway station and was taking her to Khajuri Khas on his scooter, police said. Around 10.20 pm when he crossed the Yudhister Setu, a truck driver hit his scooter. He fell on the left side while Poonam fell on the right side of the scooter. The truck driver accidentally ran over her, a senior police officer said.
The driver was caught. Poonam was declared brought dead at JPC Hospital and Muid also got injured in the accident, police said as reported by the PTI. Complainant Muid stated that his friend Poonam, a resident of Cigrette Wala Bagh, Model Town, was returning from Haridwar, said police.
A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence) has been registered at Shastri Park police station and the accused driver has been taken into custody, the officer said.
